Here's a win-win proposal

Why doesn't tribe simply offer paid accounts? It would help offset their expenses and would provide an option to people who want to have tribe the way it used to be (and should be IMHO).

Paid accounts could offer the following:

- No advertising

- password protected or "friends only" mature content

- a different TOU/TOS which severely limits tribe.net's rights to make use of user posted content (many of the artists here take severe umbrage to tribe's TOU on user poseted content...and there are a LOT of artists)

- perhaps throw in a few more profile styles

Many people don't like how tribe has changed and I believe most of them would be willing to pay a monthly fee to have the old tribe.net back. It's mutually helpful; a win-win situation. At least this way people would have a real option. Tribe can still have its free accounts with the ads and the new rules, and paid members can have relief from the same.

On the side, I really enjoy what tribe has been up until recently. It was a place that, for the most part, had much more maturity than LiveJournal and MySpace and also felt more like a community. I liked the idea that I could be free to be an adult and talk about adult things, have adult posts, etc. I didn't feel like anyone was trying to police me or play mommy.

However, like any community, when people feel that their community is changing for the worse, they will get vocal, and sometimes their courtesy and rationality departs, and I think you bear it well, Elliot. However, if no option is given to the great many people who feel they are losing the freedom that tribe used to have, then it may turn out that all you'll have is another MySpace, with legions of petulant teens posting nothing but useless fluff.

I believe the paid account idea would solve your concerns and those of the masses here, and I hope you take it into consideration. I've tried the new format, as you've asked of us, and I don't like it. If what you are seeking to have is just another MySpace, then you'll probably get it. The people who want to be allowed to be adults and make use of the rational internet rule of "if it's offensive, relief is just a click away", will likely go elsewhere. It would be really unfortunate to see something that was such a good place for so long turn into just another corporate "safety forum".

Thanks for the thoughtful post, Sylvanus. A couple of thoughts:

    - Paid accounts is something we're still considering. I anticipate that we'll offer "elite" members either more ways to express themselves, more control over what they publish, or both. I can't imagine that we'd show ads to paying customers.

    - I'm not sure we could offer a different TOU for different classes of users, and still keep everyone on the same website. And I'm not sure people would want to be segregated into a separate community -- although lately I've been thinking that perhaps there's a market for a no-holds barred social networking site, perhaps based in a nation with a less stringent legal climate.

    - As far as the flagging changes go, I view them as the first step to merging the ideas of collaborative filtering and the oft-ballyhooed "community standards." The whole goal is to get people looking at things that they want to look at, and spared from looking at things they don't want to look at. I think some people are pretty freaked out about notions of external control, but astute observers might note that the ability to flag something might actually be useful, particularly if the flagging action itself involves levels of privacy and/or distribution.

Sounds pretty reasonable. Just one question: when someone flags something, is there a checks and balances thing in place, as in staff that actually reviews flagged content to see if it is actually reasonably offensive before removing the content?
I'm sure that you're aware that here are places online where people will flag random things just to cause trouble and completely non-offensive and very useful or interesting information ends up being removed simply because someone felt like being a troll. This can cause some serious chaos and displeasure and make a community not worth being a part of when it gets out of hand.

Thanks for listening, and for the response to my last post.

One person saying "this is obscene" isn't enough to remove it. We intentionally designed a system that was robust enough to handle someone capriciously flagging things.

One suggestion I made to Warren, is that flagging should move something from public view to friends only view, and from friends only to removed, instead of automatically removing it.

I'd also like to see the ability to group my friends in different ways, so I can limit something I post to a subgroup of my friends. For example, right now I do not share this site with anyone I may work with, as I post things I may not want coworkers to read or see, if I could group my friends into coworkers and friends, then I would be more free to post things I want to post.

I hope that Tribe doesn't switch to charging for it's use! I wouldn't be able to afford it and I would be lost without it!

I couldn't really afford it either, but if I stick around, I may be spending the same on Tylenol and Pepto Bismol that I would have spent on membership. There's obviously no intention of integrity regarding the old tribe. The spirit of tribe has died.
